HOW TO REVISE FOR GEOGRAPHY

How to revise for Geography

Okay, so GCSE Geography is a 60-40 subject. 60% you'll have to memorise and 40% you'll have to understand the topics.
The thing is...mostly you need to memorise the CASE STUDIES. They are really all you need to know for an exam to at least get a B- or a C+. And if I can be perfectly honest with you, you can actually (but only in the worst case) invent times or for example, magnitudes of earthquakes... Also if you don't have an example for a river or such, you could make one up, as obviously, you teacher cannot know all the rivers in the world...

As soon as you sit down to revise for geography (preferably once a week), look at all keywords. You can produce an index page, where you have all keywords. On the left hand side of the page you have the words, and on the right you have the explanations. Once you have a nice little handful of keywords, just try and start memorising them. Remember: The longer the time period you use to memorise them, the longer they stick in your head. This is very important for two-year courses, such as GCSE.
A good helper for keywords, if you have a hard time memorising them, or fact you want to memorise, are FLASHCARDS.

A good tip for helping to memorise Case Studies, is making a nice POSTER for each case study. Not an actual poster, if you don't like, but an A4 sheet is good enough. The important aspect is the technique... You need to make it, as if you are creating it for clueless students, who you want to teach about this super-interesting case study. This is also a good thing to incorporate in the weekly study session, so it would be a case study a week, instead of cramming all case studies together, the day before an exam/ test. You are more likely to put more effort into one case study, instead of 20.

Another good tip, adding to the 40% of the subject, so to understand the topic, is to explain it to yourself. I did this, too. I was so into it, that I even made a video on it! I figured, if I watch it multiple times, I will memorise it. Unfortunately, the video was 20 minutes long, so it would have been a waste of time. But you get the concept. I also noticed, that as I explained it to myself, I noticed different aspects, I didn't understand yet, so I researched it.

Something I find absolutely crucial to pass Geography, is making well organised notes in class. Do you understand how much time this can save you?! If you make good notes in class, you won't have to do them at home, and can use that time for memorising or studying what you've already learnt and noted down. A thing, that I've noticed, is that if I don't don't feel absolutely comfortable with myself, there is no way of me concentrating in class. WHat you need to make sure of before class:
  • Have a full stomach
  • wear appropriate clothing (not too warm/ cold)
  • have all your material together (pens, pencils, highlighters...)
  • Have also all your books and your notebook
As I already explained in a previous post, you need to be prepared the night before. More on my routine you'll find on "How to get good grades and have discipline in high school".
Also make sure, you have different colours of pens, for highlighting keywords.  In this way, later on when you make your keywords sheet, you can easily find all keywords.

Last, but not least, is to do your homework. I know, it seems pretty obvious, but try to make the best of your homework, as this is just another method of revising, plus you get review from your teacher. If you put good enough effort, this will count as studying for the topic, and you won't have to do it again... Yet another way of saving your time.

General Tips in order to revise well

General Structure of a school day

Something, which I find most important in school is definitely a balanced lifestyle. Time for revision, time for sports, time for friends, time for family, and of course; time for yourself. Everything has to  be included, otherwise, you're just not living it.

Day "Rules"

  • Before school get up at six sharp, when the alarmclock goes
  • On the day of an exam, get up earlier, around 5 am to do some practise questions and be prepared for the exam without stress
  • Don't procrastinate!!!!!
  • Use your time productively; when tired -sleep/ go for a walk/ drink tea.... DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!
  • This also goes for weekends
  • Maybe 1-2 lazy days every month
  • 45 minutes after school to eat, get dressed and organize homework
  • Don't use your phone during this time
  • Organise room before going to sleep
  • If you come home and something is bugging you, write it down/ talk about it/ go do sports
  • don't start long convos on what's app and only Skype in your free time
Homework Routine

- until 9:15pm
- Schoolwork in 50-minute interwals
- 10-minute break in between
- around 7pm 40-minute break for dinner
45 minutes after school to eat, get dressed and organize homework

Free-School Day

- 4 Hours for extra-schoolwork
- finish al homework in 2 hrs
- 2hrs to look over subject notes of that week and write down stuff to memorise and then memorise it the week after
- balance time more
- less time needed for revision
- rest of the day open to do what ever you want; preferably tan

Make sure to always make good notes in class, so it will be easier to study from them. It will also save huge amounts of time. In order to do this, make sure your pencil case is always equipped with pencils and pens and to be bodily satisfied. (well rested, not hungry, doesn't need to go to the bathroom... etc.)

How to get good grades and have discipline in High School

How to get good grades and have discipline in High School

Last year was my first year at GCSE and it forced me to develop an adequate revision routine and a way of keeping my discipline. It was also the first year I had finals, as I came from the german system, which is a bit different. I started out year 10 by studying hard, but not getting the grades I was aiming for. I remember the christmas holiday, I studied all three weeks long, and knew everything about the topi, yet I still only achieved a B.

After weeks of frustration and not being motivated to work, I decided there had to be a change made. I noticed that I wasted way too much time on my phone, which I could instead use working on for example, my art work. I minimised my working time, doing more practising that writing out notes, and structured my day, so I could spread out my work more, but have more free time. I minimised my use of social media to once every two weeks and barely used my phone.

I held this structure for about a month and in that month, I only got straight A's and A*'s.

It was good for a short time, however, my motivation was used up by the time my finals arrived.

The month of May was probably the most stressful for me. I cancelled all ECA's and didn't meet up with friends. I had my final piece for art I worked on for two weeks, two GCSE English Coursework and my Geography Coursework. I was filled up with work until I broke away. When I came home I always tended to feel very exhausted, so I always ended up watching TV instead of revising. I didn't revise until the week of finals. What I did was, I read through all the notes I made for the subject throughout the year and did questions in my book. I made sure to go to sleep early and get up early the days of the exams. The week was probably the worst and longest week in school I have ever experienced. I had to drag myself to school to take the exams and was mostly full of regret before, during and after the exam, because I hadn't revised.

That's the whole reason I'm writing this blog, to help myself out for the year eleven, and hopefully other High school students out there.

introduction

Hello boys and girls!
This is a blog completely devoted to us people trying to survive our highschool years. Well, I am doing GCSE, which is like a certificate we get after year 11, or grade 10. Its some very hard years we have to get through and I have to say... We've got a big storm coming. I am approaching my second year of GCSE, so my sophomore year, and I am kinda afraid of every thing that's about to happen, it's a mix of excitement and fear. But we will take this on together! I know we can do it.
So this blog will be all about how to conquer and enjoy high school and maybe make some good memories. I will just share my best ideas and findings and help us all to make the best out of the time we have.
I will be sharing tips on how to be happy, how to revise, exam tips and also tips on crushes and stuff like that, from all the mistakes I've made the past years, for our advantage.

So good luck and my best wishes,
F
